When starting your online gaming journey, you will come across many online casino and online poker tips. As important as any other beginners’ tip is to learn a proper Backgammon board terminology. Having this knowledge will help you understand further information you will find online and offline about the game. Let us begin then by stating that “points” is the correct terminology for the elongated triangular segments that are laid down along the board. There are 24 points, 12 on either sides of the Backgammon board, the upper and the lower ones. These 12 points are further divided by “the bar” into two sections of 6 points each. The bar is the middle ridge that runs across the board where checkers are placed when hit.

According to Backgammon board terminology each of those four sections of six points has a name. The six points closets to the player’s right hand side belong to a quadrant known as the “home-board” or “inner board”. The section of six points immediately above the home-board is called “the opponent’s home-board”. Right after the bar, to left side of the home-board is the quadrant known as “outer board;” directly above it, “the opponent’s outer board”. To each of the six points correspondent to a particular quadrant a number from 1-24 is assigned beginning with the left most point in the home-board (number 1) and gradually ascending counter-clock-wise until the last and left most point in the opponent’s home-board (number 24) is reached.

Now that you know the proper Backgammon board terminology, it will be easy for you to understand the correct setup of your checkers on it. Place 2 checkers on the 24 point, five on the 13 point, three on the 8 point, and five on the 6 point. You are definitely ready for some more advanced terminology now.
